Congratulations to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputies Patrick Guthaus and Walter Kazee, who were awarded the “Sheriff’s Medal for Life Saving” for their brave actions during a domestic disturbance call in Newberry Springs.
During the call on August 10, 2020, fellow Barstow Sheriff’s Station Deputy Jay Ko was ambushed by an assailant armed with a machete. Deputies Guthaus and Kazee quickly came to Ko’s aid, taking the assailant into custody and then rendering medical aid to Deputy Ko, who was losing a significant amount of blood. The deputies were able to stabilize Ko’s condition until medical aid arrived.
Thank you, Deputies, for your quick thinking and bravery during this very dangerous call.
