As we approach the annual Point-In-Time Count on Thursday, Jan. 23, the High Desert community is gearing up for an important outreach event that will provide a snapshot of our region’s homeless population.
This count isn’t just about numbers. It’s a vital tool that helps San Bernardino County officials track progress, allocate resources effectively, and secure grant funding to support those who are homeless or at risk.
The effort to combat homelessness doesn’t stop with the annual count. The Sheriff’s Homeless Outreach Proactive Enforcement (H.O.P.E.) Team, with their ongoing initiative “Operation Shelter Me,” continues this good work throughout the year.
Just this past Friday, Jan. 17, they demonstrated their commitment by engaging with 41 homeless individuals in Victorville. During this operation, the team focused on individuals with significant mental illnesses. They provided 30 with referrals to assistance programs, 21 with follow-up professional services, and successfully linked two to housing placements.
This ongoing outreach, funded by the County Board of Supervisors, allows the Sheriff’s Department to focus on pressing community issues like homelessness and mental health, ensuring that the support doesn’t wane after the count but is a year-round endeavor.
