What a year! As we approach the end of 2024, I want to take a moment to reflect on some of the incredible events and milestones we achieved together in the First District.

As we look back on the year, it’s clear that the First District has experienced significant growth and progress. Our team has worked tirelessly to address the needs of our community, and I’m proud of our accomplishments.

Beyond the many ribbon cuttings, groundbreakings, toy drives and community events we participated in, here are some additional standout moments:

January: A Deep Dive into Critical Minerals

Our team embarked on a fascinating tour of MP Materials in Mountain Pass, a facility that plays a pivotal role in our nation’s economic and national security. As the largest producer of rare earth materials in the Western Hemisphere, MP Materials is essential for the production of advanced technologies, from smartphones to electric vehicles. It was inspiring to witness firsthand the innovative work being done and the positive impact it has on our region.

February: Empowering Future Leaders

We were thrilled to sponsor Victorville Motors’ annual “Pathways to Success” event. This incredible program provides more than 3,000 students with valuable insights into various career paths, inspiring them to pursue their dreams and contribute to our community’s growth. By fostering partnerships between local businesses and schools, we’re investing in the future of our young people.

March: A Community Cleanup Initiative

Our First District Youth Advisory Council, in collaboration with San Bernardino County Code Enforcement, organized a successful community cleanup event in unincorporated Apple Valley. This initiative not only beautified our neighborhood but also instilled a sense of civic pride in our youth. By empowering young people to take action, we’re creating a brighter future for our community.

April: Honoring Young Lives

I was deeply honored to speak at the Children’s Memorial Flag Ceremony, a solemn event hosted by San Bernardino County Children’s Network and San Bernardino County Children and Family Services that commemorates the lives of children lost to violence, abuse, and neglect.

Our office also participated in the “Shine a Light” event, which recognizes local residents who significantly contribute to child welfare and safety.

Both events are a poignant reminder of the importance of protecting our most vulnerable citizens. In San Bernardino County, we are committed to breaking the cycle of violence and creating a safer, more nurturing environment for all children.

May: Collaborating for a Stronger Future

Our entire team participated in the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority’s annual City-County Conference in Lake Arrowhead. This educational event brought together local leaders to discuss critical issues such as cyberthreats, disaster preparedness, homelessness, and emerging technologies. By fostering collaboration and sharing best practices, we can better address the challenges facing our communities.

June: Working with our Tribal Nations

I’m proud of our strong relationships with tribal nations, and earlier this summer, I met with Chairwoman Valbuena of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. I was also pleased to attend the San Manuel Fire Station’s celebration commemorating its addition to the State’s Mutual Aid System.

July: Investing in Public Safety

A significant milestone was reached when our office allocated $3.7 million in discretionary funding toward the construction of a new Victorville police station. This is a testament to our commitment to providing our deputies with the modern facilities they deserve. This investment will enhance public safety services and, in turn, improve the quality of life for our residents.

Also in July, we celebrated the grand opening of Eagle Villas 55+, a beautiful and affordable senior living community in Hesperia. This project, made possible by a $5.5 million investment from our office, provides much-needed low-income housing options for our seniors in the High Desert.

August: Strengthening Community Ties

National Night Out offered a wonderful opportunity to connect with our neighbors and law enforcement. Our team celebrated this wonderful event in Apple Valley, Hesperia, Victorville, and other locations. By fostering strong community relationships, we can create safer and more vibrant neighborhoods.

September: Honoring First Responders and Sharing Our Vision

Our team expressed our gratitude to the Bridge Fire’s brave first responders by providing lunch for 600 firefighters at Wrightwood Elementary School. Their tireless efforts during the wildfires were truly inspiring, and most certainly saved the town from destruction.

Also in September, I was pleased to be the keynote speaker at the Greater High Desert Chamber’s “State of the County” presentation, sharing our vision for the First District’s future and highlighting the county’s ongoing initiatives.

October: Empowering Community Leaders and Supporting Disaster Relief

Our office hosted a roundtable for faith-based community leaders and nonprofits, featuring updates from Providence St. Mary Medical Center Foundation and the American Red Cross. These organizations are making significant contributions to our community, most notably a new Sexual Response unit in Apple Valley that will serve the High Desert community.

Later in the month, we also participated in the Wrightwood Winter Traffic Meeting, a multi-agency collaboration taking proactive measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable winter season for both residents and visitors.

November: Supporting Second Chances

In November, I joined Second District Supervisor Jesse Armendarez and Board Chair Dawn Rowe to present a $100,000 check to The River’s Edge Ranch, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping individuals overcome addiction and homelessness. By supporting these essential services, we’re investing in the future of our community.

December: Enhancing Public Safety

We celebrated the unveiling of the “Blizzard Wizard,” a state-of-the-art Sno-Cat that will be used by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Victor Valley Station. This valuable tool will enhance public safety during severe winter weather conditions, ensuring the well-being of our Wrightwood residents and visitors.

In addition to these highlights, our office participated in numerous educational events. This includes the Soroptimists Scholarship Dinner, Victor Valley College’s Alumni Hall of Fame, VVC Paramedic Graduation, Millionaire Mind Kids Law and Justice Academy Mock Trial, and the High Desert Education Summit.

As we look ahead to 2025, I am excited about the opportunities to continue serving our community. Your trust and support have been instrumental in our success, and I am honored to represent the First District.
