On Monday, Memorial Day, we will come together as a nation to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while proudly serving our country. Please join me in remembering our fallen veterans at one of several Memorial Day events planned throughout the First District.

Town of Apple Valley ‘Memorial Day Wake Up’

Town of Apple Valley will be hosting a “Memorial Day Wake Up” from 8 a.m. until noon at Civic Center Park. I’m honored to be providing the opening remarks at 8:30 a.m., along with Mayor Curt Emick and Assemblyman Thurston “Smitty” Smith. Apple Valley High School graduating senior and bugler Caleb Felton will perform “Taps” as part of the live ceremony. The event will include a “Fill the Hill” activity, with 300 American Flags available for families to plant in the park. Wrightwood Veterans Memorial Ceremony

The Tri-Community of Wrightwood, Phelan and Pinon Hills will gather at 11 a.m. on Monday for the 13th annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the Wrightwood Veterans Memorial. The event will feature remarks from Congressman Jay Obernolte, music from Claudia Campbell and a prayer with Pastor Dave Conrad. Members of the Boy Scouts of Wrightwood will also participate. The Veterans Memorial is located at 1274 Evergreen Road in Wrightwood.

Spring Valley Lake Memorial Day Flag Parade

Spring Valley Lake will host its 7th annual Memorial Day Flag Parade and Moment of Remembrance at 2 p.m. Monday at the Spring Valley Lake Community Center. A parade of bikes, cars, golf carts and more will circle around the lake to honor the fallen.  A Moment of Remembrance is planned at 3 p.m. at the Country Club’s Veterans Monument on Spring Valley Parkway.

Free Day Use for Veterans at California State Parks

California State Parks will offer free Day Use admission to veterans, active duty and reserve military personnel in participating California State Parks, including Silverwood Lake SRA, on Memorial Day. Valid military ID must be shown in order to receive free admission.

Saturday Poker Run to Benefit Local Veterans

The Victor Valley Marine Corp League Detachment 1383 is hosting its 1st Annual Poker Run on Saturday, May 29. Proceeds will benefit the Orenda Veterans Project, Inc., supporting the veterans of San Bernardino County.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Victorville Harley-Davidson, located at 14522 Valley Center Drive, Victorville. Stops will include Apple Valley, Crestline and Wrightwood. Cost is $30 per rider, $15 per passenger and $5 for extra poker hand. All hands are due by 2:30 p.m., and the winners will be announced at 3 p.m. All bikes and cars are welcome!
