The Bridge Fire, which ravaged parts of Wrightwood in September 2024, left behind not just ash and destruction, but also an increased risk of flooding and debris flow.

In response, the San Bernardino County Flood Control District assembled a Safety Assessment Team (SAT) to identify vulnerable areas within the fire-affected communities.

The team identified several creeks in Wrightwood — including Swarthout, Flume, Heath and Sheep Creeks —as being particularly susceptible to flooding due to post-fire conditions.

To mitigate this risk, the Flood Control District is taking proactive measures. They’ve installed K-rail barriers along Swarthout Creek and are stockpiling additional barriers for deployment during severe storms. Additionally, they’re increasing the capacity of flood channels and constructing earthen berms to manage potential debris flow.
