The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is hosting two meetings regarding the State Route 39 Reopening Project, which would connect the Greater Los Angeles city of Azusa to the First District community of Wrightwood.

Residents can weigh in on four options regarding SR-39:

  1. Close the road permanently
  2. Open the road to emergency vehicles and maintenance crews only
  3. Open the road to limited use, such as public transportation shuttles and bicycles, with parking lots
  4. Fully reopen the existing road to public traffic

Caltrans has prepared a report that looks at how each option could affect the environment, including plants, animals, water, and air quality. Residents can read the environmental report online or at the Wrightwood Library (6011 Pine St., Wrightwood).

The following public hearings have been scheduled:

  • In-person: Tuesday, April 16, at the Azusa Auditorium (213 East Foothill Blvd., Azusa). You can also watch it live online.
  • Virtual: Saturday, April 20, at 10 a.m. on Zoom (register here).
